Science has proven that expressing your emotions aloud helps the brain assess the “threat level” of the feelings you are experiencing. This helps you to make better sense of your feelings so you can deal with it in a constructive manner and eventually file it away and heal.
Most people who have seen the 2002 movie Chicago with Richard Gere and Renée Zellweger will recall the more glitzy musical numbers like the Cellblock Tango and All That Jazz. But for a small group of viewers the song Mr Cellophanewill forever be the most moving of them all. The disillusioned and tragically lonely character sings the words “you can look right through me, walk right by me and never know I’m there…” If you, as a teen/tween or adult adoptee, have ever felt invisible, inconsequential, or isolated you need to hear that you are not alone. And, more importantly, you need to hear that you do not need to carry on living like this.
When someone who (seemingly, at least) has it all “figured out” tells you that things will “get better” it usually does not have the encouraging effect they intend it to have. When we are down and out, the last thing we want is for someone to be condescending towards us, even if they don’t mean to be. But when you find someone who is willing to listen without judgement, or who has been where you are the situation changes. Given the opportunity to express your feelings aloud, without having to worry that they might be inappropriate, is liberating and helps you release yourself from burdens.
